REVIEWS FOR THE ALBUM
BUMPIN' ON

'The Eminent Stars maybe bring a bit more roots into their music here – by really leaning on the lead vocals of Bruce James – a raspy-voiced singer with a style that has plenty of roots in New Orleans styles from years back.  Gives the record a strong focus, in a legacy that might run up from Dr John through Joe Cocker – but with more funky combo instrumentation overall.'

Dusty Groove, Inc.

'An old-school R&B and southern soul combo who sound like they’re from New Orleans — but actually hail from Amsterdam. Vintage, authentic, infectious, fun, upbeat, groovy, lively, smoky, funky, soulful.Best songs? Jukebox classics like Just One Taste, On the 5, Bar Shift and Big Easy Dreams.'

Darryl Sterdan -  Tinnitist

'This is an album filled with infectious grooves. Even the slower songs will have you swaying and/or looking for a dance partner. Don’t be surprised if you end up a little sweaty after listening to this entire album'

Glide Magazine - 23 november 2019

Arnold Pijot - Benzine

It’s their brass blazing cocktail of funk, blues and whipped up sincerity, heart and bags of soul on top, that turns this into a grooveliciously vibrant and fresh bop!..

The Dutch Guy - Kick Ass Indie Jams

'Five years down the road from debut long player Sittin’ In and Holland’s The Eminent Stars are back with a second album Bumpin’ On , that very much capitalises on the promise of both that first LP and funk burner single Bar Shift from 2017. One thing is certain, things will be very much bumpin’ along.

JS - Sonic Soul

'Bumpin’ On is one feel good retro funk and soul album. It brings a lot of old school NOLA funk and Memphis soul together with excellent vocals, thumping horns and all around excellent musicianship. This is a very American sounding album from a Dutch funk band – how great is that? And how did it happen?'

www.funkcity.net  / november 2019

'The Eminent Stars’ Bar Shift vinyl 7″ is their first new material since 2014’s Sittin’ In With album and damn if it doesn’t top anything on that. Once again the band team up with the whiskey-voiced Bruce James who lays it down about – well – his bar shift and in doing so provides an anthem for skid row intoxicologists everywhere. Always the same faces in the main it seems but he’s working hard and he ain’t never going home. No sir. Just as well too since he’s the perfect accompaniment to this tight, uptempo burner constructed from clattery funk drums, a fiery blues guitar riff and tight horns. Over on the flip is keys-led instrumental Brown Thang which lilts and lopes along like a pimp doing his limp. Hit me hard!'

funk biz

Soul Bag Mag - nov 2019

‘Just One Taste’ opent lekker met ietwat vette funk, gevolgd door het soulnummer ‘On the 5’. Vervolgens klinkt het instrumentale ‘Mrs. Phillips’ ietwat “mellow”, terwijl ‘Big Easy Dreams’ een uptempo “feel good” track is. '

Eminent Stars: An Old But Not Forgotten Groove
March 18, 2014· by DJ Prestige ·

'When the founders of Eminent Stars got together in some old, dusty room with analog equipment to lay down some tracks for a record, they had one sound in mind. That sound was the 60's and 70's coming out of New Orleans, when a certain breed of bands were churning out special music from a special city. It’s a distinct sound, one that by today’s standards is old, but not forgotten. Why is that? It’s all about the groove baby. Their debut record on Tramp, Sittin’ With, echoes that groove of yesteryear and moves just like its forefathers. This record digs deep into the soul of the sound, drawing from Funk, Gospel, Soul, and R & B while taking the listener back to the sweaty Bayou clubs and rocking them until dawn like it was done before. One of the founders, saxophone player (plus engineer and producer) Ben Mendes surrounded himself with some top notch musicians such as Toon Oomen on drums, percussion, and guitar, Mischa den Haring on guitar, Andert Tijsma on bass, and Dirk Beets on trumpet to lay down one bad ass funky record. From the huge drum break on “Ready To Fly” (featuring Imelda), to the Dr. John influenced “A Good Woman” (featuring Bruce James), to The Meters echoing in “My Baby Is Hot”, and other stand out tracks like the organ heavy “Tune In” (someone has been listening to Touissaint McCall) and bubbling “Slow Cooking Baby”, Sittin’ With has a serious ‘Nawlins vibe and feel. It’s cool to see bands emulating this era, N.O. had its own sound, and when a song starts, you know exactly where you are, even if you’re 10,000 miles away. This music is associated with heavy players, from Eddie Bo to Lee Dorsey, Professor Longhair to Jellyroll Morton, and Eminent Stars represent the sounds emanating from AM radios during that time period quite well. This is a sound we could never forget.'

Muziekwereld (NL)- March 2014

Jazzchill.blogspot (UK)- 19-3-2014

Stardom seems eminent with this fierce funky combo – a quintet of players with a deep love of southern sounds from the 60s – particularly the best grooves coming out of Memphis or New Orleans! The mix of instrumentation features tight trumpet, tenor, and guitar – and although the group's core jamming is the main appeal of the record, the set also features guest vocals on a number of tracks – different soul-styled vocalists who collaborate with the group, and create a nice sense of spontaneity and variety throughout. Titles include "The Club", "Hearts Are Jumping", "Ben's Dungeon", "Dead Cat", "Tune In", and "Smokey One".

My Baby Is Hot" deftig los.

Review in soulandjazzandfunk.com - jan-22-2014

Founded by sax man Ben Mendes and drummer Toon Oomen, The Eminent Stars are a Europe-based soul, funk and blues instrumental combo who take their inspiration from the music of New Orleans in the 60s and 70s. On their new 13 tracker there's plenty of their Meters-inspired workouts – notably the opening 'Ben's Dungeon' and the feisty and sparse 'Jumping Beans'. However bringing real variety and freshness to the Eminent Stars' sound is a team of vocalists who notch up the soul quotient no end.

American Bruce James guests on the bluesy, down-home 'A Good Woman' and the Southern styled 'Hearts Are Jumping'. His voice has just the right amount of gruff edge to make the tunes convincing. Lana Gordon's out front on the scratchy funk of 'Write Me' while the simply named Imelda takes lead on 'Ready To Fly'... maybe a little too rocky for soul sensibilities. However, died-in-the-wool soul folk will have no problems with 'The Club'. Big and boisterous, the lead vocal's handled by Steffen Morrison and the cut's a great Northern soul pastiche... one of the most authentic recreations I've heard in a long while. I tell you if it was burned onto a 7" 45 and covered up you could kid anyone that it was a long lost Loma or Mirwood classic. Morrison also features on the country soul of 'Smokey One'. That leaves the LP's oddity...'Voodoo Do Mar'. This one's fronted by Aricia Mess and its slippery, snaky sound is a proper New Orleans gumbo.

The album was recorded in just a few days on vintage equipment and what 'Sittin In With The Eminent Stars' lacks in polish and finesse is made up for in enthusiasm and commitment. The album comes in CD, limited edition vinyl (500 copies only!) and as a download with bonuses.
